But in the recent times, the modern kitchen has been so sophisticated, to the extent that some people under use it, or do not get the maximum benefits from the modern kitchen. So, how does the modern kitchen make your life easier?

What is a Modern Kitchen?

A modern kitchen can be described as a kitchen that encompasses modern appliances, with open spaces, and minimalist features. The cabinets are sleek, flat, frameless, and the countertops have a touch of flamboyance. The surfaces of a modern kitchen are also smooth, polished, and uncluttered. Appliances tend to blend directly into the cabinetry, leaving a sense of admiration from any eye that lands on the whole kitchen set up. The modern Kichen will make your life easier and definitely more convenient.

What is a rice cooker?

Invented in 1955 by Yoshitada Minami from Japan, a rice cooker is an electric kitchen appliance that is made to specifically cook rice by setting the timer and leaving the rice cooker to cook by itself. The outer layer of the rice cooker contains a heating element and a thermal sensor.  The thermal sensor contains a thermometer, and is fitted at the bottom of the apparatus, right where the inner pot sits on. The material of the outer layer is made of aluminum or steel in most rice cookers, to help regulate temperature required to cook rice.

The inner pot of the rice cooker is used to hold the rice and water while cooking. It is made of ceramic, non-stick and stainless steel.

The science of cooking the rice

Rice expands approximately 3 times its original volume or capacity when it is finished cooking. This can help you gauge the amount of rice to cook versus the size of the rice cooker. It is converted from small hard grains to big fluffy particles. The rice expands through absorbing the water. For the rice to be cooked effectively, you should mix 1 measure of rice with 2 measures of water for white rice. Brown rice is higher in fibre than the white rice, and it may necessitate an additional measure of water to make it 1:3 ratio for effective cooking.

The weight of the rice inside makes the inner pot to rest heavily on the heating element, and the thermal sensor, hence heat is conducted to the inner pot. The water inside a rice cooker boils at a temperature of 212°F (100°C), and as long as the rice cooker is connected to the electricity, this temperature is maintained throughout the cooking process.

The lid is fixed tightly on top of the cooking rice so that the enclosed steam assists in cooking the rice. Once there is no more water to boil in the pot, the temperature starts to rise drastically, and the thermal sensor senses the temperature has risen above 212°F (100°C), and hence the rice cooker automatically switches to warming mode. This avoids monitoring while cooking, hence meant to make your life easier. If you used the correct measures of water and rice, your rice should be very well cooked with great accuracy. Many rice cookers will come with indicator lights that shows both when the rice cooker is cooking and when it is in warming mode.

Places of very high altitudes can alter the normal ratio required for universal cooking, as water boils at temperatures below 100°C.

Rice cookers make your life easier. Being automatic means you do have to supervise your food as it cooks, and can do something else.

The Electric Pressure Cooker

What is a pressure cooker

A pressure cooker is a kitchen appliance made up of a sealed chamber, that accommodates steam generated from food contents in the cooker being heated, to increase temperatures above 100°C (water boiling point) hence reduce cooking time.

Who invented the pressure cooker

With the name Steam Digester or Papin’s digester, the pressure cooker first appeared in the year 1679. It was the work of a French Physicist called Dennis Papin. He definitely came to make your life easier.

It was not Until 1930’s, that the pressure cooker was introduced in the home kitchens. Before that, the pressure was actually dangerous, as the steam pressure could build up so high that the covering lid would literally explode off. With the advancement of technology though, the pressure cooker exploding has been reduced to zero. It has become one of the favorite cooking appliances for most people, especially those wishing to cook very hard foods at the shortest time possible. And now it falls in the category of appliances that can make your life easier.

How Does The Pressure Cooker Work

The electric heater fitted at the bottom of the cooker’s chamber heats the food contents in the cooker. The steam generated from the act of heating does not evaporate off, but it is contained in the sealed chamber. When the steam builds up to greater levels, the temperatures in the chamber rise up above the normal temperatures of boiling water, 212°F(100°C) going up to 266°F(130°C).

This high temperatures quickens the penetration of cooking water into the food particles, without denaturing minerals and any vitamins available. Due to lack of evaporation, the extraction of flavor from the food becomes more efficient.

High altitude affects the boiling point of water. The high the altitude above the sea level, the lower the boiling point of water. This means at very high altitude places, food takes longer to cook, because the cooking water or liquid is not hot enough. Pressure cookers can be used to counter this.

In general, the cooking of a pressure cooker can be said to follow the ideal gas law. When a gas is exposed to heat, their potential energy is converted to kinetic energy, and the particles collision with each other and against the container wall increases. This leads to kinetic energy being converted to heat energy. If the particles cannot find an escape, more kinetic energy will be converted to heat energy, and that is how the high temperatures build up.

The pressure cooker comes with a valve at the top that acts as an escape to some gas particles, when the pressure they create goes beyond manageable levels. This is what prevents the explosion of the pressure cookers. The valves will lift automatically regularly to keep the pressure at manageable levels, and this cycle will continue.

Pressure cookers make your life easier. They save on time, and also the enhance the safety of cooking.

The Air Fryer

What is an Air Fryer.

An Air fryer is a kitchen electrical device that uses convention to circulate hot air around food in order to cook it

Who Invented The Air fyer

An inventor from Netherlands called Fred Van Der Weij started working on the idea of using hot air convention to cook in 2005, but only officially announced its completion in 2010. The air fryer hence was birthed in 2010, after numerous attempts.

How Does an Air fryer Work?

The Air fryer is a countertop appliance placeable on a table. It comes fitted with a compartment that is used to hold the food being cooked. To some air fryers, the compartment is accessed from the side of the air fryer, to others it is accessed from the top. Now, this air fryer machine depends on the air convention principle of physics. Once the desired food is placed in the compartment, and the device is fitted with electric power, the air fryer lid starts heating the air that is within the compartment.

Hot air is lighter and will always want to go to the top. The air fryer lid is hence also fitted with a fan that blows the air to ensure the circulation of the air around the compartment. With continued supply of electric energy, the temperatures get hotter and hotter, and the hot air is able to penetrate the food contents and actually cook them.

To make your life easier and healthier, this mode of cooking replaces the use of deep fryers as a mode of cooking, as the same way the hot oil penetrates the food contents, it is the same way the hot air penetrates the food contents and cooks them. The only difference is the nature of output food, as the air fryer focuses on bringing out crispy effect on foods.

The concept of air circulation also reduces the cooking time compared to when using oil to cook.

The air fryer can be used to fry food, reheat, bake, dehydrate, and even roast. This is especially made possible because the temperatures can be adjusted according to what one is cooking to avoid overcooking or burning food.

Air fryers make your life easier and better, with their ability to replace the deep frying with air penetration, and hence improving the health of people in general. They save on time , money and are convenient as their versatility make them useful around the kitchen, to the extent of replacing other appliances, like the oven.

Microwave

What is a microwave

Just like the name, microwaves are electrical kitchen devices used to reheat food by use of microwaves, which are electromagnetic radiations.

Who invented the Microwave

Percy spencer, a raytheon engineer is said to be the one who invented the microwave in 1946, after being exposed to the use of radar technology in the world war 2. It is interesting to note that the invention of the microwave was purely by accident. Percy was testing his magnetron and he noted his snack getting affected by the radiation and melting, and that is when he got curious. Let us now observe how this device aims to make your life easier.

How the Microwave Works

Microwave ovens produce electromagnetic waves through use of magnetrons, which are electric tubes.  These electromagnetic radiations are called microwaves, and they are 2.4GHZ Frequency. These microwaves cause the water molecules in food to vibrate, causing heat energy to be produced, and the food cooked from the inside out. Microwaves are energy efficient because they do not heat the whole cavity of the microwave, only the food. When the microwave energy is absorbed by the food, it is converted to heat energy, but does not make the food to be radioactive itself.

Microwaves work the best in cooking and heating food because they are able to pass through glass, paper, ceramic or plastic material, which food can be placed in. Aluminum foils are not suitable to be used in this case as they reflect the microwaves, which can cause destruction of the microwave oven.

Though the microwaves are overly not dangerous, over exposure to the eyes and the testes can be dangerous.

Microwaves make your life easier and more fun. They save on electricity since they only heat the food elements. They also save on time since they have proven to be the fastest and most economical appliances when it comes to reheating food.

Blender

What is a blender?

A blender is an electric kitchen appliance that is aimed to mix, crush, puree and emulsify food, especially fruits among other substances. It was invented by a scientist called Stephen Poplawski in 1922. Poplawski introduced a very vital way of increasing the consumption of super nutrition boosters and increasing nutrient absorption in people’s daily food consumption.

With a blender, you can make pastes, smoothies or juice, and can be used to crush ice, and make pastes or liquids from solid foods. The blender will make your life easier, healthier and more joyful.

How Does a Blender Work ?

The blenders come with a base that is made up of a motor, and enclosed with a body that has control buttons, aimed to control the speed of blending, the powering of the blender among other functions. Depending on number of functions that a blender can do, it comes with several external jars and containers. For instance, the Sayonapps 4 in 1 blender, SB 3555 comes with 4 extra containers, all fitted with different rotating blades at the bottom, depending on the function. Some containers are for crushing cereals, others for mincing meat, others for blending fruits etc.

For a blender to be effective, and give good results, the particles must be small enough so that the mixture will flow. The first step of a blender is therefore to cut, chop and smash the food particles into small particles. After this, the food substance is turned into a thick fluid. The next step now involves mixing the fluid, especially if one was blending different varieties of fruits. The spinning blades are able to create a spiral effect known as vortex. It is this spiral effect that includes the food and the air creates a vacuum at the center of the spiral movement. This pulls all the food towards the centre, and in the process mixes them.

Also, through a rising of the food temperature during spinning due to friction, cavitation occurs. Cavitation is what makes it possible to have a final result of a very smooth puree, or a rich emulsion with a homogenized blend of ingredients and a consistent texture.

Blenders make your life easier. Being automatic means , the blenders come with preset conditions that make the user just watch them do all the work. They make accessing a healthy lifestyle easy and affordable.

What is an electric Kettle?

An electric kettle is an electric kitchen device fitted with a heating unit within itself, used to boil or heat water through use of electricity.

Who invented The Electric Kettle?

The first Kettle was invented by Arthur Leslie large, an employee of a company called Bullpit &Sons’ Swan brand in the year 1922.

William (Bill) Russell improved it in the year 1955 by making it automatic.

How Does an Electric Kettle Work?

Inside every electric kettle, it is fitted with an electric coil. The kettle operates under the principle of physics that, when electric current passes through a high resistant conductor, then energy is lost in terms of heat energy. The coil is made up of Nichrome, an alloy made up of 80% Nickel and 20% Chromium.

Nichrome is used as the heating element because it has very high resistance, and high melting point. How fast an electric kettle boils water is dependent on the amount of voltage used to heat up the heating element.

Once the Heating element conducts the heat to the water, the water continues to gain the heat upto the boiling point. Because the electric kettle is enclosed, the vapor is enclosed and helps raise the water temperature faster. The kettle also comes fitted with a thermostat, mostly at the upper part. The thermostat is connected to the on and off switch of the kettle. This reduces the necessity of monitoring your water, aimed to make your life easier. Once the thermostat detects heat from the built up vapor has reached the boiling point of water, then the switch automatically goes off.

The kettles also come with a strix control  technology that id able to detect when the kettle has no water, and the heating element stops conducting heat.

The electric kettles make your life easier, and also work. Being automatic means you do not have to keep monitoring your water. The electric kettles have also proven to boil water faster than any other form of heating, hence saving your time.  The electric kettles are convenient and portable, so one can travel with them.

Modern Kitchen Appliances

Cooking is one of the arts that are so fulfilling, thrilling and sensational, which for a long time had not been well appreciated. I come from a tribe in Kenya where cooking does not really inspire any artistry or creativity, and any Kenyan will tell you that tribe.

However over the last few years, the advancement in cooking technology has managed to break the ceiling and for the first time, even my local kinsmen are finding beauty in cooking adventures, and even trying out recipes that have been proven more healthy and beneficial. So let us go through the journey from traditional cooking all the way to the Modern kitchen, and see what really has caused this shift.

History of the African Kitchen

Africans have experienced an amazing development of their kitchen, with most traditional modes of cooking being inspired by traditions and culture. To date, many Africans still use the three stones method of cooking, where you arrange 3 stones on a circle, and then light your fire at the middle of the stones.

Cooking is and has always been seen as a way of bringing the family together, as they cook together and sit around the fire. The older people would narrate to the young ones tales and stories as they waited for the food to be ready. This was very important in African tradition because the only way to pass information and knowledge from one generation to the next was through the word of mouth.

The African kitchen today is still visible in the midst of the technological developments. The availability of information all over the internet has transformed cooking from just mashing things up to fill the stomach, but an adventure for the family to take together, while enjoying the benefits of speed and accuracy in terms of ingredients quantity among others.

Why a Modern Kitchen?

  1. Faster cooking

Compared to the traditional forms of cooking, the modern kitchen offers means of cooking that are faster and safer. Many of the cooking appliances in the modern kitchen are as a result of many years of research by scientists and nutritionists, hence offering the optimum cooking solutions to almost any type of food. For instance, a Sayona Pressure cooker reduced the time taken to cook a local dish called githeri from an average of 3hrs to an average 20 to 25 minutes.

  1. Energy efficiency and Environmental friendly.

For us to measure the energy efficiency in a modern kitchen, we have to do a comparison with the traditional Charcoal and firewood. The modern kitchen is a smart new technology kitchen. Most Appliances in this kitchen will auto regulate themselves and will switch off when they have finished cooking. Most appliances will regulate the amount of electricity or even gas used per cooking time, and optimize the distribution of the energy in terms of intensity required in different times.

  1. A center of adventure and creativity.

Culinary arts is the art of preparing, cooking, presenting and serving food. Just like Poetry, Music, Love, Nature, Cooking is an adventure full of awesome beauty and satisfaction. From choosing the best ingredients, to choosing the best recipe to use for your ingredients. Then comes the appliances that make the application of these recipes a success.

Food appeals to us from the way it looks, the way it is presented before our eyes, the way it smells and the way it tastes, all this are made possible by the modern kitchen that allows such levels of practice to be a success. Modern kitchens hence play a major role in enhancing our food enjoyment to the fullest.

  1. Encourages healthy living.

The modern kitchen has been description as the place where science finds its application. The modern human being is able to take in more nutrients from the food he eats compared to the people who used or still use traditional kitchen appliances. The modern kitchen ensures less destruction of nutrients, better absorption in the body and better combination of foods to ensure a balanced intake. Due to advanced technology, Obesity and other health conditions have been in the increase, and the modern kitchen has come with a solution for that.

One would argue it is from the modern kitchen where people also consume the unhealthiest foods when they are after good taste, and at the expense of good health, people consume all manner of junk, with unhealthy chemicals. But the best thing about this is that, they do this with a perfect understanding of what they do, not as victims, but as ones who chose their fate. This is the beauty of the modern kitchen, everyone chooses their fate will perfect understanding of the consequences.

  1. Offers more than just kitchen.

The modern kitchen is not just a kitchen, but it is also described as the heart of the home, the epitome of the mothers’ love, the place where the art of culinary is brought to life. Life is created in the bedroom, but is sustained in the kitchen. Without the kitchen, the life in the living room is not worthwhile.

In the morning, families gather in the kitchen, as they get ready for the day. People want also a kitchen that allows guests to be sipping some fruit juice as food is being prepared, and they chat. The kitchen is no longer to be enclosed and hidden as far as possible. The kids wants to do their homework around the kitchen, around the adults preparing supper. The kitchen hence brings the family together, as sometimes the living room draws the people apart. Mostly in the kitchen, people will not be on phone, but will be totally available.

Best Kitchen Appliances

The modern kitchen cannot attain that name unless the kitchen appliances are brought in the picture. The following is a list of the modern most useful kitchen appliances in this 21st century.

  1. Blenders

A blender is an electric kitchen appliance, invented by Stephen Poplawski in 1922, with an aim to crush, mix, emulsify or purée food and other substances. 1. Mixer

A mixer is a kitchen device, that can either be manual or electric, that is used to mix, fold, beat and whip food ingredients. They use a gear driven mechanism to control beaters directed into a bowl containing the food to be mixed. The beaters can be replaced by dough hooks to mix dough. and knead.

Mixers can either be hand operated, or self-operating. Hand mixers are smaller than the stand mixers. They require full attention while you do the mixing, as you have to hold the mixer above the bowl and control its movement. The advantage is, you never use a speed too slow or too fast as you are in total control, and you can adjust the speed on the mixer from what you are experiencing fast hand.

The stand mixers on the other hand are self-operating. This means you just pour your ingredients into the bowl and leave the mixer to mix for itself. They are much powerful and very helpful to busy cooks. They are a bit expensive and bigger in size than the hand mixers.

We also have mixers that are manual mixers. This ones don’t depend on electricity to run, but completely depend on the persons hands. They come in handy when one wants to mix something small very fast. They are perfect for camping and outdoor activities.

  1. Microwave

A microwave, sometimes called an electronic oven, is  an electric kitchen appliance that cooks food by exposing it to high frequency electromagnetic waves or radiations called microwaves. Microwaves are used to reheat, cook or even bake food from within to the outside. They greatly reduce cooking or heating time, hence are preferred when saving time is of essence.

How microwaves work is that, the radiations produced make the polar molecules in the food, in form of water, fats, sugar etc., to vibrate and produce thermal energy. The food hence cooks from the inside out, and even the air surrounding the food is not heated up.

  1. Air fryer

An air fryer is a countertop electrical device with adjustable temperature and time controls that uses convection to circulate hot air around food in order to cook it.

Air fryers come in handy in the kitchen to fry food, bake, dehydrate, and roast, among other uses.

Air fryers have a compartment that holds the food that is being cooked.  The device relies on a mechanism called rapid air technology, in which a heating element within the top of the machine radiates heat downward, while a fan rapidly circulates air around the food inside to heat it evenly from all angles. The air-tight, compact design of air fryers ensures that all air is contained in the chamber and actively flows around the food, promoting the intensity and efficiency of cooking.  This mode of heat transfer is also known as convection, in which energy is distributed through the movement of a gaseous medium.

Meanwhile, excess fat and residues typically drain into a compartment below the food to be discarded, greatly reducing the amount of fat ultimately consumed by the user.

The Air fryer hence replaces the use of oil with use of hot air, and can be very useful especially to people who are very concerned about their health.

Amazing Benefits of a Blender

What Is a Blender

A blender is an electric kitchen appliance used to crush, mix, emulsify or purée food and other substances, increasing the consumption of super nutrition boosters and increasing nutrient absorption in people’s daily food consumption. It was invented by Stephen Poplawski in 1922.

The benefits of a blender include; improved nutrients absorption, offers the best way to keep the fibre in food, and helps us to consume the less tasty but beneficial foods by mixing them with the tasty ones.

How do blenders work?

At the bottom of the blender are spinning blades that are attached to a motor. There is a control panel that has several different speeds, allowing the operator of the blender to switch the speeds that the spinning blades spin with.

You push a button to start the machine, and the spinning blades create a spiral effect or a vortex. The first step of the blending process is to cut down, smash and chop the food component. This step allows the food in the blender to be fluid. The spiral effect of the components, or the vortex in the blender which includes both now the liquid food and air creates a vacuum at the center of the spiral movement. This pulls all the food components towards the center, which ensures a perfect mixture of all ingredients in the blender.

The end result in this step is a rich emulsion or a smooth puree, with a homogenized blend of ingredients and a consistent texture.

Benefits of a Blender

One may be tempted to ask whether blenders have been overrated. Let us try to analyze the benefits of a blender and find out whether they are overrated or not.

  1. Best way to eat more Fruits and vegetable.

Topping in the list of the benefits of a blender, is that with a blender, you get to eat more fruits and vegetables. Now, because most people have grown accustomed to highly processed food, readymade or convenient food, many people simply don’t like the taste or texture of vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are a great source of vitamins and minerals. From Vitamins A, C and E as well as Magnesium, zinc, phosphorus and folic acid.

With a blender, you can actually make smoothies with fruits, vegetables, ice and your favorite flavors. To an amazement, vegetables in smoothies don’t even taste like vegetables

  1. Improved Nutrients Absorption

Did you know blending is one of the most efficient ways of maximizing the intake of nutrients from the food we eat. Food that is not broken down properly will lead to a number of nutrients failing to be absorbed. It can also lead to constipation or bacterial infections in the gut. Blended food is already partly predigested and in liquid form. This will automatically maximize the amounts of nutrients absorbed from the food. It also improves your health and general happiness.

Even though the fibers remain, the cell walls of the food are broken down, allowing a super improved absorption.

  1. Faster Meal preparation.

If time is of essence to you, then the blender is a mega time saver when it comes to kitchen equipment. With a blender, you avoid all the hustle of hand-mixing, chopping and mashing. Just add your ingredients to the jug, and blend. It takes less than 5 minutes to make most blender recipes,  whether it is smoothies, dressings, sauces, frozen treats, dips to name but a few.

Amazingly, you don’t only save the time to prepare the food, but also the time to digest and absorb, what a mind-boggling device to have in your kitchen.

I have tested and proven the Sayona Blenders, and the following clip is an evidence of the faster meal preparation as one of the benefits of a blender.

  1. Blending is an opportunity to mix the less tasty but beneficial food with the tasty food, and consume them together.

Citrus Fruits like the Oranges, lemons, lime and grapefruits are some of the fruits that are very bitter, but very essential in our bodies, not living out vegetables like the artichokes and arugula. Some people will not attempt to take them alone, and when mixed with sweet fruits like the pineapple, they become bearable to eat. To those people, the benefits of a blender being part of their kitchen are enormous.

  1. Blending keeps the fibre

Fiber is very essential in the digestion process in the body of a human being. It is a tough food, and it actually does not get digested, but passes through your system simply as intact as it is, in order to help move all the other food through the system effectively. If the fibre is able to pass through your teeth, the stomach acid, and all through it does not break down, well, then neither can the blender destroy the fibers.

All pureed food has the fiber as much as the whole fruits version. Smoothies therefore retains all the fiber contained in fruits and vegetables. Juicing is however a bit different, in that juicing separates the juice of the fruits from the pulp and peel, that has the fibre. Below are few reasons why fibres keeping makes it to the list of the benefits of a blender.

Importance of fiber in a diet

  • Keeps you satisfied for a longer time
  • Helps maintains bowel health.
  • Helps in achieving a healthy weight. Since consuming more fiber makes you full faster and for a longer time, you tend to eat lesser.
  • Fiber has been proven to reduce constipation. Fiber is believed to absorb water, and speed up the movement of stool through the intestine.

  1. Blending is a way of simplifying our fat consumption

Many seeds and nuts found in fruits, and many fruits themselves contain omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, that play a major role in our bodies. These are healthy fats that we cannot do without in our bodies, present in fruits, like the avocado. The benefits of a blender is that it gives you the opportunity to consume these fats without our knowledge, hence improving our health.

  1. Cleaning a blender is very Easy

Since all the fibre and peels from the fruits are completely processed, there are no leftovers left to make cleaning hard. So, when compared to other kitchen appliances, it is one of the easiest to clean.

To add on the benefits of a blender is that, it is a self cleaning machine. By simply adding water and soap in to the blending jar, closing the lid and turning on the blending function, the blending will clean itself, what an amazing benefit.

  1. Blending gives you a chance to include new foods In your diet.

For those foods that are hard to ever include in our diet, simply because we do not love them, they are almost like those tv stations we never know exist in our list of programs on your tv, yet their value is exceedingly great. The benefits of a blender is that, blending gives you an opportunity to mix them with your favorite foods and you don’t have to love them to consume them, just enjoy the nutrients they offer to you.

Why Eat Vegetables and Fruits

  • Lowers the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. They also prevent some type of cancer, eye and digestive problems. Amazingly, most vegetables and fruits can be used as appetizers, as they have a very low glycemic load, which prevents sugar spikes, increasing hunger.
  • Great source of vitamins and minerals, including Vitamins A, C and E as well as Magnesium, zinc, phosphorus and folic acid.
  • They are rich in fiber. Fiber is very important in your gut health, preventing constipation.
  • Fruits and veggies tend to be low in calories, and replacing your high calorie foods with them can greatly reduce your calories intake and hence promote weight loss.
  • Healthy for the brain. Researchers have linked the consumption of the antioxidants in the leafy greens to reduced risks of Alzheimer’s disease and also dementia.

What fruits and vegetables blend well together

  • Melons are not recommended for any pairing. Research has shown pairing melons with other fruits lead to stomach discomforts.
  • Kale, Cucumber and Pear go well together
  • Strawberry go well with plum, pineapples, banana and Apple
  • Pineapples go well with Kiwi, Oranges, Grapes, Strawberries and blueberries.
  • Oranges go well with pineapples, Avocado, tangerine, Mango, Pomegranate, plum, apple, strawberry, pear
  • Mangoes go well with Oranges, banana, peach, blueberry, pear, avocado, grapes, plum

Tips:

  • Always pair a maximum of 6 fruits for optimum results and to avoid stomach upset due to digestion problems
  • Never mix acidic fruits, like Oranges, Grapes and strawberries with sweet fruits like banana, for digestion purposes.
  • Never mix vegetables with Fruits. Let fruits go with fruits and vegetables with vegetables, with an exception of Carrots and Apples which go with practically any product.
  • Melons are celibates. Melons go with melons only.

Most hated Fruits And Vegetables of all time

  10. Turnip

How to clean a Blender

  • Add hot water to the blender halfway
  • Add liquid soap to the water
  • Close the blender with the lid, turn on the blender, and the blender will simply clean itself.
  • For the outside, mostly only a few, if any spill overs will be present. You only need some warm water and a soft cloth and you wipe it clean
  • Finally, rinse the blender in cold water, and the blender is ready for use for next time

NOTE: The base of the blender that contains the electricity components need not be washed with water, only wiped with a soft cloth.

What should you look for when buying a blender?

  1. The size and capacity of the blender

One of the key factors you can never really ignore is the capacity the blender you want to purchase. You can purchase a blender either for commercial purposes or for home use, and this will highly determine the capacity you go for.  Sayonapps blenders that I have interacted with come with all sorts of capacities, depending on the purpose of your blender.

A standard size can serve up to 6 people, while a high performance size can serve up to 15 people.

  1. The power of the motor

The amount of power that a blender packs is the greatest determinant of differentiating high performance, conventional or commercial/home use blenders. The powerful the motor, the more the benefits of a blender will be.

Sayona’s Blender with the lowest Power has 300W, which is capable to blend most foods except the hardest of ingredients.

High performance blenders with a wattage of over 800W have the ability to work with dry ingredients, and you can make peanut butter, process grains into flour and has no limitations in your adventures of cooking.

So, depending on the intensity of what you want to blend, you will chose the blender with the wattage that serves you the best.

  1. The Speed settings

Many blenders are multipurpose, and are featured with different speed settings, and controls for different purposes.

Sayonapps blenders for instance come with a minimum of 2 functions to a maximum of 7 functions, and speeds of up to 5 settings, ranging from low, medium and high speed. As you would expect, the benefits of a blender will increase with increase in functions and speed settings, and so will the cost.

Speeds and Settings Guide

  • Fast Speed

Fast speed is essential when mixing liquids, purees or pastes. This speed will do a perfect work of mixing them to a fine and perfect mixture. This speed is not essential for hard ingredients.

  • Medium Speed.

If you are interested with a coarser and rougher texture, then this speed is the one to go for. This speed is also very important when it comes to chop vegetables, and to prevent nuts from turning into a paste, but leave them almost powdery.

  • Low Speed

When you want to mix a liquid with a solid systematically, then this is the speed to go for. It is best set for ingredients, and crushing them into a paste slowly.

  • Pulse

This one is not recommended for blending for a long time, only a short time. It comes in handy for crushing something like ice, and for cutting ingredients into smaller pieces.

  1. The material of the jar.

For material, there are two options, the glass jars or the plastic jars. If you chose the glass jar, it will be a little expensive than the plastic jar. Glass jars are loved more and preferred because through them, there is elimination of any consumption of chemicals.

  1. Cost.

Most important factor to consider in the whole process is the cost of purchasing. It is important to note that for every price range, you will find a blender, from as low as Ksh. 3,000. So, do not squeeze yourself on a budget that does not fit you. Even the cheapest will do most of the blending needs, but the more expensive, the more options you have (benefits of a blender will increase with increase in cost)

Air Fryers or Deep Fryers, Which is Better in 2022?

AIR FRYERS or DEEP FRYERS

Which one is better, an informed review

Air fryer or deep fryer? This debate has been on the rise in recent times, as most people are switching to using Air fryers to fry chips, chicken, while others choose to stick to the traditional means of using deep fryers. So, how do the two compare?

What is an Air Fryer

An air fryer is a countertop electrical device with adjustable temperature and time controls that uses convection to circulate hot air around food in order to cook it.

How Does An Air Fryer Work?

What is a Deep Fryer?

A deep fryer is a type of a kitchen appliance designed to heat cooking oil  to high temperatures, used for deep frying foods such as Potato chips, french fries etc.

They can be built for home use and commercial use, the difference typically being size and features.

Comparisons between Air Fryers and Deep Fryers

Air Fryers Deep Fryers
1.   Other than frying food, it can be used to bake, dehydrate, and roast food, among other uses. Only used for Deep frying food
2.    Achieves frying by hot air circulation Achieves frying by full immersion of food into liquid hot oil.
3.   Uses very little to no oil Uses a lot of oil, so that food can be submerged in the oil.
4.   Easy clean up, as they use little to no oil Disposing large amounts of oil can be a hassle sometimes

AIR FRYERS vs DEEP FRYERS

From a health point of view

By most measures, air frying is healthier than frying in oil. It cuts calories by 70% to 80% and has a lot less fat. Heart Diseases, type 2 Diabetes, Cancer, Obesity among other health complications have been linked to deep frying food in oil.

Air frying might also cut down on some of the other harmful effects of oil frying. There is a chemical component called Acrylamide that is caused when you fry potatoes or any starchy food. This component has been linked by researchers to greater chances of getting cancer. Air frying has been shown by various studies to reduce the amount of Acrylamide in fried potatoes by 90%.

When preparing your fish using the air fryer, a substance called “Cholesterol oxidation products” (COPs) is formed. COPs form when the cholesterol in meat or fish breaks down during cooking. One way to lower the amount of COPs when you air fry fish, the study shows, is to add fresh parsley, chives, or a mixture of the two. Research shows these herbs act as antioxidants to reduce the COPs in air-fried foods.

Did you know Air frying also appears to curb the omega-3 fatty acids in fish? These are the “good fats” that can help lower blood pressure and raise “good” HDL cholesterol levels, and they may help protect the heart.

BENEFITS OF USING AN AIR FRYER OVER A DEEP FRYER

Advantages of an Air Fryer

Versatility, Energy efficiency, Cooking oil free, are some of the benefits that have been highlighted for using an air fryer, as compared to other modes of cooking like deep frying. So, what are the benefits of an Air fryer over other traditional modes of cooking.

  • Cooking With Air Fryers Promotes Weight Loss

Switching from deep-fried foods to air-fried foods and reducing regular intake of unhealthy oils can promote weight loss.

Intake of fried foods has direct links with higher obesity risk. This is because deep Fried foods contain more calories than their non-fried counterparts, so eating a lot of them can significantly increase your calorie intake. It’s not that you can’t eat fat—nutritionists recommend fat to make up 20-35% of your diet. But eating too many fried foods is an easy way to overdo it on fat, and in turn, calories.

Furthermore, studies indicate that the trans fats in fried foods may play a significant role in weight gain, as they can affect the hormones that regulate appetite and fat storage.

In fact, an observational study that reviewed the diets of 41,518 women over eight years found that increasing trans fat intake by 1% resulted in a weight gain of 1.2 pounds (0.54 kg) in normal-weight women.

Regardless of whether it’s because fried food is high in calories or trans fat, multiple observational studies have shown a positive association between its intake and obesity.

  • Air fryers are safer to use compared to Deep fryers

Deep-frying foods involves heating a large container full of scalding oil. This can pose a safety risk. They pose the risk of spilling over, overheating which may cause fires and even severe burns. While air fryers do get hot, there is no risk of spilling, splashing, or accidentally touching hot oil. People should use frying machines carefully and follow instructions to ensure safety.

  • Air fryers reduce the risk of Acrylamide Formation

Frying food in oil can cause dangerous compounds to develop, such as acrylamide. Acrylamide is caused when you fry potatoes or any starchy food. This component has been linked by researchers to greater chances of getting some cancers, including endometrial, ovarian, pancreatic, breast, and esophageal cancer. Air frying has been shown by various studies to reduce the amount of Acrylamide in fried potatoes by 90%.

Research has also suggested a link between dietary acrylamide and kidney, endometrial, or ovarian cancers, though the results are uncertain

By switching to air frying, people can reduce the risk of having acrylamide in their food.

What are the pros and cons of an Air fryer

Air fryers promise deep fried flavor without oil, they are easy to use, easy to clean, highly versatile and associated with healthy living. This explains their fame over the recent years.

But, like any product, they have downsides. They’re bulky, difficult to clean, and have limited cooking capacity. Here are some explained pros and cons of the Air fryers.

Pros of using an Air Fryer

  1. Crispy food

The convection-style heating surrounds food in a perforated basket or on a rack, increasing its contact with super-hot air on all sides.

Using just a touch of oil, not more than a teaspoon, will help your food crisp up. This is especially true with fried and breaded items that you’re heating up or cooking in your fryer — the oil on the outside of the food will get heated by the air, helping to cook the breaded items to a crispy golden brown.

Factors To Consider To Achieve Crispy Food Effect In An Air Fryer

  • Ensure your air fryer is not too full. Air fryers need the air to circulate freely to cook the food evenly. If the air is restricted because the basket is too full, you food will be unevenly cooked and not as crispy as you want. So consider the amount being cooked.
  • Make sure the temperature being used to cook the food is correct. The temperature chart of the Air Fryer for specific recipes can help you select the right temperature. Cooking the food at too low a heat will not crisp your food.
  • The dryer the food, the crispier the results. Essentially, ‘dry’ foods deliver better results. These include foods like French fries, meats, vegetables, breaded items and frozen items.
  • Adjust the cooking to be correct. Depending on the food you are cooking, each food will require different time, so it may well be that you need to cook the items a little longer, or a little less. Again, there is a time chart to help you achieve this.

  1. Healthier meals

You can cook delicious meals in an air fryer with little to no oil. When you use oil, you only use 1 or 2 teaspoons of oil which is negligible. Once the heat runs over the oil, creates a layer over your food and any excess oil drips off the food while it cooks, collecting in the bottom of the basket. This will definitely ensure less consumption of calories and Trans fats.

There is a chemical component called Acrylamide that is caused when you fry potatoes or any starchy food. This component has been linked by researchers to greater chances of getting cancer. Air frying has been shown by various studies to reduce the amount of Acrylamide in fried potatoes by 90%.

  1. Reheats food and cooks faster

Air frying is a faster cooking method that shortens both the pre-heating time and cooking time of many foods with its rapid air circulation technology.

Compared to conventional ovens or toaster ovens, an air fryer preheats and cooks food in a fraction of the time.

Most air fryers can preheat to 400°F in five minutes or less. Compared to gas cookers and electric ovens that can take an average of 15 minutes to reach the same temperature, definitely the air fryer is serious with the time saving business.

The Air fryers are replacing ovens in this manner. If you take the Oven recipe of any food, you will be able to cook it in an air fryer at 20% less time if you reduce the temperatures by 25°F . This is the power of Air Fryers.

  1. Less clean up required compared to deep fryers

Deep fryers requires a lot of clean up. After using a deep fryer, you end up with a lot of dirty pans, grimy utensils, and a greasy coating on everything around the fryer, hence deep frying is very messy. Air fryers, on the other hand, are relatively clean. The cooking basket is completely enclosed, which eliminates splattering and all the fat, grease, and oil in your food drips down into the oil pan below. Considering you use very little oil, and air fryer baskets are made with PTFE non-stick coating or a ceramic non-stick coating to aid in easier cleanup, cleaning is almost effortless.

Cleaning an air fryer:

  • Remove the Air fryer basket.
  • Soak the air frying basket in soapy water for at least 10 minutes to dislodge oil and food scraps.
  • Use a soft bristle brush, dish washing soap to wash the basket, to avoid scratches. Allow it to air dry.
  • Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the heating element of the air fryer if any food is stuck. This place is sensitive and contains electric components, so avoid using water.
  • Use a soft cloth to dry the air frying pot.
  • When fully dry, put the basket and air fryer pan back into place.
  1. Easy to handle and use

One of the best advantages of using an Air Fryer is that it comes with a time chart, temperature chart for various recipes that are recommended to be cooked via an Air fryer. The Sayona Air fryers actually particularly provide a digital display.

For the most part, all you need to know are the temperatures and cook times for what you intend to cook.

  1. Safe to Use Compared to Deep Fryers

Deep fryers rely on using several cupful of oil, to deep the food content. This poses a risk of oil spills, burns and even causing fires, which has happened in several occasions.

Since Air fryers use minimum oil to achieve the frying effect, the danger posed is less. The all food components are fully enclosed and this reduces the risk further.

Safety tips when Using An Air fryer

  • Do not attempt to clean the air fryer until it has cooled.
  • Keep the power cord away from excess heat.
  • Read the manual before starting to operate the air fryer.
  • Never wash the air fryer lid using water, because it contains the electricity components.
  • Clean after Every use. Oil remains and food residuals can turn into carcinogens over time.
  1. Versatility

Want to cook a Main course, a dessert, a side dish or even an appetizer, the Air fryer will help you. Unlike a deep fryer, an Air fryer is an appliance for more than just air frying. Its versatility, including the Sauté function in which you can even boil your cassavas, or cook Ugali is an advantage that cannot be overlooked.

Apart from Air frying, the Air fryer can roast, bake, given that other accessories can be fitted like cake and pizza pans, for various recipes..

Here are a few examples of what you can cook in an air fryer:

  • Roasted pumpkin seeds
  • Cookies
  • Egg rolls
  • French fries
  • Frozen, breaded, or battered foods
  • Lava cakes
  • Homemade chips
  • Hard-cooked eggs
  • Chicken breasts or parts
  • Burgers and Patties.

  1. Doesn’t take up much space

The air fryers are fairly small to medium size, and even the biggest will still not dominate your kitchen space. Most air fryers are only the size of a small oven or a coffee machine. This is an essential feature considering a kitchen should be as open and spacious as possible, to avoid accidents and other complications.

Cons of using Air Fryers

  1. Difficult to store under cabinets and small spaces.

This is majorly because most of them are tall, especially when including the air frying top. But this should only be a problem to a person who plans to use the air fryer once in a while. For most people, thanks to its versatility, you can leave the Air Fryer on the Counter top as you can regularly use it to cook various foods. It does not occupy much space of your counter.

  1. Too small for large families

Air fryers are relatively small, but not as small as you would dim concerning. You can find air fryers that can cook a meal of one person up to a meal of 6 or 7 people, which is a whole household. I would recommend the Sayona Air fryer/pressure cooker, which has a considerable capacity to cook for several people.

Sayona Air fryer pot has a diameter of 9 inches, and a capacity of 6 Liters, considerable for a good amount of food.

  1. Wasted food

The versatility of the Air Fryer gives you a chance to try out different kinds of food recipes not even included in the recipe menu. In this manner, as you try out the different menus, it is always a trial and error, until you get it right. Once in a while you experience very dry food, overcooked or sometimes burnt food until you are able to completely get it. This is normal.

  1. Short power cable

Most power cables from many Air fryers will require your Air fryer to be close enough to the power source. Again they are not as short to the point of concern. For instance I have tested the Sayona Air fryer, and the Power cord is long enough for convenient cooking, over one meter long.

Air Fryers vs Deep Fryers Time

Most air fryers can preheat to 200 degrees in five minutes or less. Compared to gas cookers and electric ovens that can take an average of 15 minutes to reach the same temperature, definitely the air fryer is serious with the time saving business.

The Air fryers are replacing ovens in this manner. If you take the Oven recipe of any food, you will be able to cook it in an air fryer at 20% less time if you reduce the temperatures by 25°F. This is the power of Air Fryers.

The cooking time for the deep fryer is however a bit more faster compared to air fryer. This is expected as when food is dipped directly in hot oil, the oil will penetrate faster compared to the air fryer that depends on penetration of the hot air. The difference is however negligible, and not one to raise a concern. The following is a time chart for various Sayona Air Fryer recipes.

Sayona Air Fryer Cooking Time Chart

Function Default Time
chips 15 mins
Fish 15 mins
Hamburger 13 mins
Pizza 15 mins
Beef Steak 25 mins
Chicken Leg 22 mins
Bake 30 mins
Chicken 40 mins
Dehydrate 2 hours
Broil 10 mins
Corn 15 mins
Defrost 5 mins

 Air Fryers and Power Consumption

Does the air fryer consume a lot of electricity? The answer is a clear no. We did a case study using the Sayona Air Fryer in collaboration with the Kenya Power and Lighting Company, from the study, if you cooked for an average of 32 mins, the air fryer/Pressure cooker will consume 0.32Kwh of power which translates to ksh. 6 according to the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) rates.

A full meal made via pressure cooker used 0.42 kWh which cost 10 ksh. cooking for 1hr for more than 1 meal

Air Fryers and Radiation

Unlike Microwaves, Air fryers do not produce radiations, but only uses radiated heat, which is different from radiation. Even with microwaves that produce electromotive force radiation (EMF), neither of the two is a radioactive kind of radiation, hence not harmful to your food.

Air fryers only rely on circulating hot air over the food in its chambers as quickly as possible. This process causes the outside of the food to dry out extremely quick and creates a crispy coating.

Hence, Air fryers have not been associated with causing cancer and are completely safe to cook with.

Air Fryers Vs Deep Fryers Taste

The most amazing thing about the taste of the Air fryer is the ability to bring out the crispiness and crunchiness that is so unique cannot be compared.

Deep fryers also give their unique taste that is so unique because of being dipped in oil. Hence each of them has their unique manner.

While they didn’t have that deep-fried crisp, the fries were still very crunchy when finished cooking in the air fryer.

CONCLUSION

In a world where health has become a big concern, scientists, nutritionists and product developers have spent countless hours of research to develop the best strategies to cub this. Consumption of deep fried food has been associated with heart diseases, diabetes and obesity among other problems. The air fryer allows you to cook oil free, avoiding all the risk.

If your highest priority in your food intake is just good taste, regardless, then you would prefer to buy a deep fryer.

If you are concerned with both taste, health benefits, and also a device that can do more than just fry food, you can consider buying an Air Fryer.

I would recommend the sayonapps Air fryer/Pressure cooker which I have personally tested and proven.
